PE
INTENT
Here at Paston Ridings we believe that Physical Education is essential to ensure that children attain optimum physical and emotional health. Our intention is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning that are targeted to inspire all children to succeed. We want our children to learn how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding the values of fair play to embed life-long values. The PE curriculum aims to improve not only the fitness but the wellbeing of our children through the sporting skills taught and through the values and disciplines that PE promotes.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our PE curriculum will be implemented through a range of well differentiated sporting activities that include invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, dance, gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities as well as swimming for our Key Stage 2 children.
The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
Pupils will participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, taught by specialist PE teachers, with each class learning two sports per half term.
Outside of curriculum time a wide range of extracurricular activities both in lunch times and after school clubs, which are targeted to encompass a wide range of children with a variety of activities. In Key Stage 2 some children have the opportunity to lead physical activity for others, which are led by two Year 6 children who are Sports' Ambassadors for the school, who are great role models for others. Additionally, on Sports Day the entire Year 6 class are used as Sport Leaders to assist in the effective running of the day.
Our school is also highly active in local and county level events. Through these competitions our children gain an understanding of the world of competitive sport and how best to work as effective team members.
In Key Stage 2 all children swim for at least a period of one half term with children in Year 3 and 4 participating in a full term of instruction in order to accelerate their progression.
Additionally, within our curriculum we plan a range of out of school opportunities for the children to access a variety of alternative sports. These include rock climbing, golf, water sports, archery and fencing.
IMPACT
We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports and physical activities through high-quality teaching that is both engaging and fun for our learners. From these lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, and many of them also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills to become effective participants in a wide range of sports and foster a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives by utilising the skills and knowledge that they have acquired through Physical Education.
